What is a Fab Lab?
Fab Labs grew out of MIT professor Neil Gershenfeld’s dream of providing everyone with access to the state-of-the-art prototyping and fabrication facilities available to large corporations and universities. In a Fab Lab, people can unleash their creativity by creating “products for one,” unique objects that meet that individual’s specific needs. Entrepreneurs can also design and prototype products to start or grow their business or organization. Whether you want to build a replacement part, create a unique piece of art, or design a product for your startup business, Wabeno School’s Fab Lab will help you create your own unique products.
What Processes Are Covered in the Fab Lab?
Tech Lab: Laser Engraving and Cutting, Vinyl Cutting, Computer Modeling and 3D Design, 3D Printing, and Engraving.
Wood Lab: Basic to Advanced Woodworking, Wood Turning, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Wood Routing and Finishing
Metals Lab: Traditional Metals, Traditional Machining and Welding
What is the cost?
The Fab Lab offers access to easy-to-use equipment and expert instruction, as well as workshops at a very affordable price. For a small fee, use the facility independently during Open Lab hours. Please refer to the workshop schedule for Lab costs.
What is an Open Lab and what are the hours?
The Fab Lab is open for individual use during posted times. These Open Lab hours are scheduled weekly.
Who uses the Fab Lab?
From teen to senior, novice to skilled, the Lab attracts engineers, artists, artisans, entrepreneurs, musicians, teachers, students and the curious at heart. Looking for a new hobby? Are you an inventor with a great idea? Do you need to acquire the skills to execute? Every level can benefit by our impressive collection of equipment, tools, technology and intellectual resources.
Do I have to know how to use the equipment to access the Lab?
Every individual that wants to use the lab must complete the Introduction to the Fab Lab Workshop.
I know how to use the equipment. Can I book time on a machine?
Yes. A member of our staff will work with you initially to ensure you are familiar with the equipment and our safety procedures.
If you'd like to simply be involved in the Lab, there is always room for volunteers who are interested in helping us to improve our services. Contact Brian VanEperen, Fab Lab Director, for volunteering opportunities. You can reach Tim at (715) 473-2592, Ext. 5115 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
